Lecture: Piety and devotion – 16th-century murals in the Virabhadra Temple in Lepakshi, India

Members of the KVVAK are invited to a most interesting seminar - organized by IIAS and the Rijksmuseum - about 16th century murals in the Virabhadra Temple in Lekpashi, India. During this seminar professor Anna L. Dallapiccola will explore these awe-inspiring murals in one of the finest Vijayanagara period temples, one of a few who have not suffered disfiguring additions. The murals are particarily notable as all other evidences of the Vijayanagara painting in Southern India have disappeared or detoriated. With their specializations in Indian art and iconography it promises to be an exciting seminar.

Symposium Japanese Lacquer

We are pleased to announce that the Royal Asian Art Society and Society for Japanese Art have collaborated to organize a series of lectures on 3 July 2022 in the Rijksmuseum Auditorium on the occasion of the exhibition in the Rijksmuseum, "Modern Japans Lak" (Modern Japanese Lacquer). An exquisite collection of Japanese lacquer from the period 1890-1950 will be on display in the Philips wing of the Rijksmuseum from 1 July to 4 September.  The symposium features four speakers who will discuss in detail various aspects of Japanese lacquer: from traditional elegant scenes in gold, silver, and black, to vivid colours and bold motifs. The first three lectures are in Dutch, the last in English. All lectures will be recorded and made available with English subtitles.

The collection has its say: Students and Things That Talk

How do you get an object to talk? Can an object tell a story by itself, or do you always need people (and texts) to do so? Anyone interested in such questions is welcome on June 18 at 13.00 pm in the Rijksmuseum Auditorium to hear presentations by nine students and young researchers about objects from the KVVAK collection and other Rijksmuseum objects (and other collections).
